How to Clicker Train a Stay

Introduction:

Clicker training a dog to stay will make this behavior more reliable off leash and at a distance than using leash corrections or constantly repeating the word "Stay".

Things You'll Need

• Clicker savvy dog
• Clicker
• Treats

Steps:

Step One

Ask your dog to sit or lay down close to you. You may want to have them on a leash or tether to minimize the possibility of mistakes.

Step Two

Give the hand signal for stay. This is usually done by holding your hand in the same way a traffic cop orders traffic to halt--with your arm extended in front of you with your wrist bent so that your palm is facing your dog and the back of your hand is facing you. You may also use the word "stay" but use it once and do not chant stay, stay, stay...

Step Three

Count to three. If your dog does not move, click and treat. If he moves try having him stay for only 1 second at first. Do this step a few times, increasing the amount of time you wait to click by 2 seconds on each repetition.

Step Four

When your dog will hold the stay position for ten seconds, give the hand signal and take a step to the side. Click and treat him if he does not move. Continue adding steps until you can get about six feet from him. Reward his behavior for staying still when you step away by clicking and treating.

Step Five

Increase the duration of the stay behavior gradually by delaying the click. When your dog has a solid stay for a two minutes add distractions such as people walking by or staying in another location. If your dog will not stay with a new distraction, try something less stimulating for a little while until the behavior is more reliable.

Step Six

Your dog should not get up without hearing a release word once he has learned to stay. Select a release word that you will use every time it is okay for him to move from the stay position. Pair it with the clicker for a few training sessions until he knows that the word means he is released.

Step Three

If his stay behavior is very strong and he is hesitant to stand, click and treat him for moving his head toward the treat.

Step Four

When he has successfully stood 3 times, do the same steps without a treat in your hand. Have the treat on a table, or in your pocket. Place your hand above in front of his nose, move it away from him, click and treat when he stands.

Step Five

To add a verbal cue for this behavior, say the word "stand" wait three seconds, give the hand signal you have been using. Click and treat when he stands. Do this three times. The first way to use a clicker to train your dog to sit uses a food lure. With your dog in the standing position, hold a treats just above his nose. Move your hand back between his ears. His nose will go up, his bottom will go down. When his backside touches the floor, click and toss the treat to the side. He will go get it and you can do another repetition.

Step Two

When he has successfully sat 3 times, do the same steps without a treat in your hand. Have the treat on a table, or in your pocket. Motion your hand above his nose, move it back towards his ears, click and treat when he sits.

Step Three

Step Five

Once your dog is sitting every time he looks at you, add the verbal cue "sit" as soon as he begins to sit. Click and treat.

Step Six

For a nervous dog, you may want to try shaping the behavior. This is done by clicking and treating the beginning of a sit. Do not talk to the dog. Smile at him, watch closely without staring at him. Click any behavior relating to sit such as lowering his bottom, raising his head, lowering his tail, or dropping his ears. Repeat this a few times.

Step Seven

Raise the bar in the next training session by only clicking actions that are closer to the sitting position. Within a few short sessions your dog will be sitting each time he sees the clicker. That is when it is time to add the verbal cue in the same way described in step 5.
